Inaugurating the campaign at the Central Cottage Industries Emporium here, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Vinod Khanna, hoped that people would cooperate with SOS and buy rakhis in bulk from them thereby helping them in their mission of providing every child with a home. The Director of SOS Children's Villages of India, Pradeep Singh, said: "Raksha Bandhan is a festival unique to India. It is, therefore, an appropriate occasion for us to seek the protection and everlasting friendship of the people at large for the SOS children and therefore make them feel that they are not alone.'' The campaign, being organised in various States of North and Central India, will culminate on August 12, the day of Raksha Bandhan. The goal of this campaign is to foster brotherhood among the children of SOS Villages and to make them feel the promise of the Indian society for them. Participating actively in the programme, several children belonging to SOS Villages presented a colourful cultural show depicting the festival of Raksha Bandhan. These children also tied symbolic rakhis to the dignitaries present on the occasion. The Managing Director of the Central Cottage Industries Emporium, Durgesh Kumar, said that by providing a platform for the activities of SOS, the emporium aimed to establish a model practice for other people all over India. Offering his full assistance to the SOS Villages India, he noted: "Children are the most important people in our society. The Cottage is happy to lend its support to our children, who are going to be the carriers of our civilisation.'' The gathering was informed that SOS Children's Villages, a non-profit organisation, was established way back in 1967 by Padma Shri J.N. Kaul and now provides home to nearly 15,000 children in 34 children's villages of India. Through this campaign, the organisation aims to raise funds by promoting awareness for the cause of children. At the inaugural function today, rakhis were put on sale at the Cottage Emporium and people contributed generously by purchasing these SOS Rakhis. Rakhis will also be sold in other prominent commercial establishments all over the country during the campaign period. The funds collected through the sale of these rakhis will go to the SOS Children's Villages.
