Lessons from A.P.

Sir, — Your Editorial, `Lessons from Andhra Pradesh' ( July 19 ) is a timely reminder to the State Government which is wasting time and money on the `clean and green' programme without doing much to clean the drains and sewers in towns and villages. With the advent of the monsoon, they become cesspools and spread various diseases such as Japanese encephalitis, gastroenteritis, diarrhoea, dengue and cholera.

It is not the first time that the State is reeling under these diseases. Some action is initiated against the Government staff and later the episode is conveniently forgotten. A five-day health and sanitation campaign alone will not deliver the goods. The State needs political will to keep pigs away at least from residential localities, as killing all of them is nearly impossible. A virology institute should be established in the State immediately as suggested.

M. Onnuriah Chetty,

Proddatur, A.P.
