Letters to the Editor
Sir, The killing of eight Army personnel in a fidayeen attack on an Army camp in Akhnoor is deplorable. While we rightly opposed the deployment of our forces in Iraq, it is ironical that we are unable to do anything to protect our military on our own soil. Our armed forces deserve a better deal. Roopali Bhatnagar, Delhi * * * Sir, The spurt in terrorist activity in Kashmir is on account of inaction on the part of the Government. As a concerned citizen, I demand that the authorities and the Army conduct pre-emptive strikes on terrorist camps along the Line of Control. This will not only prevent infiltration, but will cut off essential supplies to the terrorists who, when isolated, can be effectively tackled. Hector Hema Sagar, Hyderabad * * * Sir, The terrorist attack on the Tanda camp is a direct challenge to the peace initiative. Pakistan must rein in terrorist outfits and close all terrorist camps with immediate effect. Otherwise, there is no point in continuing our peace efforts. If there is another `fidayeen' attack in the State, India should take a pro-active stance and pursue the militants well into the other side of the border. K.M.G. Vivekanandam, Madurai, T.N. * * * Sir, The macabre act of violence against hapless pilgrims who were on their way to the Vaishno Devi temple must be condemned. The Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's "healing touch" has done nothing but invigorated the separatists. Given the regularity and ease with which they strike, a mere increase in the presence of the armed forces will not suffice. The gravity of the situation calls for clamping President's rule in the State. Alok Srivastava, Ahmedabad
