BCCI project: Hurdles will be cleared, says Shinde

By Our Special Correspondent

Mumbai July 24. The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, has assured the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President, Jagmohan Dalmiya, that `hurdles will be cleared' to establish the Board's headquarters at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) premises at `D' Road, Churchgate, and the State Government is prepared to give a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the MCA.

It is understood that Mr. Shinde told Mr. Dalmiya that Mumbai's Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) restrictions would not come in the way of the BCCI moving its office from Stadium House, Brabourne Stadium, to a property to be developed at the Wankhede Stadium.

The CRZ rule that came into effect in the 1990s does not allow for development of new property within 500m of the coastline.

The presence of MCA President, Sharad Pawar, who took a day off from Parliament proceedings in New Delhi to specially present MCA's proposal in Mumbai on Wednesday, has expedited matters now for a special committee headed by Vice-President, Kamal Morarka, to recommend its decision to the Board's Working Committee that will meet in August.

The other members of the sub-committee are Messrs. N. Srinivasan (Vice-President, BCCI) and Kishore Rungta (Hony. Treasurer, BCCI).

Mr. Pawar was a special invitee at the Board's Headquarters committee meeting. In the course of the deliberations, Mr. Pawar, whose National Congress Party is a coalition partner in the State Government, called up Mr. Shinde and requested him to speak to Mr. Dalmiya.

Three years ago, the Board had decided to locate its headquarters on a 4500 sq. ft area at the Brabourne Stadium. It appears now that the BCCI office will be relocated to the Wankhede.
