Karnataka-Bangalore
By Our Staff Reporter
"Over 75 per cent'' of the 1,000 theatres in the State remained closed for the fifth day on Tuesday, and the hopes of a quick resolution of the service tax issue died down. At a press conference called by the Kannada Film Producers' Association, Raghavendra Rajkumar, actor-producer, said "the producers have decided that there will be no talk of sharing the service tax; we are for the abolition of the tax.'' The association would not participate in a meeting called for Wednesday by the Minister for Information, Ecology and Environment, Allum Veerabhadrappa, he said. Instead, the producers wanted to meet the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, and submit a memorandum to him. They would take out a rally from the Janata Bazaar on K.G. Road on Thursday morning. The veteran Kannada film actor, Rajkumar, would lead the rally, the association members said. Some of the producers present included Sa. Ra. Govind, K. Manju, and Muniratnam. Devraj, actor, also put in an appearance. The producers claim to have the backing of all the segments of the Kannada film industry.
