By Our Special Correspondent
Responding to a calling-attention motion moved by C. K. Nanu (JD-S) in the Assembly today, Mr. Soopy said that around 10,000 new vacancies of teachers had been created at the higher secondary level after the UDF Government came to power. The vacancies would be filled with temporary hands till the recruitment of permanent staff, he said. The Education Minister said the Government had decided in principle to sanction new courses in Government colleges beginning next year. The colleges would be asked to route their request for new courses by October this year. The proposals should be for new subjects such as biotechnology, computer science, tourism and journalism and not for conventional courses, he said. Mr. Soopy said the Government had also decided to sanction Plus Two courses in a few Government schools. Tax exemption: Responding to a calling-attention motion moved by T. U. Radhakrishnan (Cong.), the Rural Development Minister, C. F. Thomas, said the Government was actively considering a proposal to exempt khadi and village industries from paying sales tax. Mr. Thomas said the Government would also clear a portion of the rebate arrears due to the khadi and village industrial units soon.
