However, 2,000 cusecs of water was released into the TLBC on Tuesday to ease the drinking water scarcity in the camps and villages in the command area. Though the ayacutdars have been restricted from using water for irrigation, it is learnt that many of them have taken up paddy cultivation. They are expected to draw water from the canal for irrigation. On Monday, the inflow into the Tungabhadra Reservoir was measured at 8,900 cusecs, and it is expected to increase in the coming days following good rainfall in the catchment areas. The water level in the reservoir stood at 1,597 ft. (maximum level 1,633 ft). On Tuesday, the water stored in the reservoir stood at 17 tmcft. The storage in the reservoir should be 30 tmcft. to irrigate kharif crops in the command area on either side of the dam. A minimum of 93 tmcft. of water is required to supply water for both the kharif and summer crops in the entire command area of the project. Though the department has decided to release water into the TLBC for kharif sowing, a final decision will be taken at a meeting of the Tungabhadra Irrigation Consultative Committee to be held in Bangalore on July 18. Meanwhile, the department has already released water into the Right Bank Low-level Canal (RBLLC) for power generation. It is expected that water will be released into the RBLLC by the end of this week.
