Injuries mark first round of Dutch Open

AMERSFOORT (Netherlands) July 15 Zeljko Krajan of Croatia suffered a shoulder injury and Georgia's Irakli Labadze hurt his wrist, forcing both players to forfeit their singles matches on Monday in the first round of the $ 400,000) Dutch Open.

Seventh-seeded Nicholas Massu of Chile defeated Hicham Arazi of Morocco 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), while Franco Squillari of Argentina, the No. 9 seed, beat Krajan, who retired in the second set.

Dennis van Scheppingen of the Netherlands took a 7-6 (6-3), 1-0 win when Labadze backed out in the second set. Also, Luis Horna of Peru beat eighth-seeded Albert Portas of Spain 6-3, 7-5.

Tournament officials could not immediately say how serious the injuries were.
