Akram quits county season due to ill-health

By P. Subramanyam

London July 15. Ill health forced Pakistan's pace bowler Wasim Akram to quit his Hampshire county contract abruptly, it was announced on Tuesday morning.

He has played only five of its eight championship matches and taken 20 wickets.

The 37-year-old was signed as a replacement for Australian Shane Warne, who was banned for a year for failing a drug test.

Since reporting at Rose Bowl in Hampshire, Akram has been struggling with his health and missed an odd game with various ailments.

Akram, a known diabetic, after consultations with his doctors, is understood to have made the decision to quit playing for the county immediately.

He expressed his regrets and thanked the club and wished it every success.

He said, "I greatly enjoyed my brief stay at Hampshire.''

John Crawley, Hampshire's captain said, "his departure has come as a bit of a shock to us.

He has been terrific this season, even if he has not quite been able to sustain his old fast-bowling aggression,'' and added, "we're very disappointed, but, obviously the most important thing for him is to get his health right, so we accept that.''
