SAI felicitates volleyball and wrestling teams

NEW DELHI JULY 15. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) felicitated the silver winning Indian youth volleyball team at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium here on Tuesday and took the opportunity to present the facts on its joint venture with the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI).

About two crores of rupees were spent on the project `Operation Gold' on men, women and juniors over a period of two years, leading to a healthy scenario in Indian volleyball.

The expenditure was on screening, preparatory national camps, international exposures, travel and daily allowances of players and officials, expenses on kits and medical needs.

"SAI is just the arm of the government. It is because of the transparent functioning of the federation, the efforts of the players, a scientific programme and suitable financial support from the government that we have been able to achieve these results'', said Mr. M. P. Ganesh, the executive director of the teams wing of the SAI.

On being queried why the Indian volleyball team was not cleared to compete in the Asian Games in Busan despite such an ambitious project, Mr. Ganesh said that it was a policy matter of the government.

"After the recent efforts of the volleyball teams there will be a review of the status of the game in the government's priority list'', said Mr. Ganesh.

The Indian teams had won the Asian Youth Championship, finished runner-up in the Asian Junior Championship apart from finishing runner-up in the World Youth Championship two days ago in Thailand.

The executive director of the operations wing, Mr. C. R. Gopinath, stated that SAI was running many programmes in many centres catering to many levels in different games. The wrestling team that had done well in the Commonwealth Championship in Canada was also present during the felicitation, and the SAI explained its efforts in supporting the numerous `akharas' around the country in helping develop the sport. Earlier, both the volleyball and wrestling teams were presented to the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Vikram Verma, at the Shastri Bhavan.
