Koramangala residents launch campaign against tree felling

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE July 13. A huge rain tree, which stands in front of the Koramangala FoodWorld outlet on 7th Main, is being "poisoned" to death.

Several holes were drilled into the tree trunk, and acid was poured into them, allegedly by builders of a commercial complex in the area. Three trees were felled in front of the office of a multi-national company (MNC) near FoodWorld.

Another tree has fallen on the fence of a park nearby because of digging by optic fibre cable firms.

The Koramangala Residents' Civic Group (KRCG), which has started a movement to protect trees, is doing its best to stop tree felling in the area.

Despite this, over 100 trees were felled recently, the KRCG members allege.

However, no sapling has been planted to compensate for this, they say.

They have started a signature campaign against tree felling, and involved college students in the effort. The residents of the area are deeply concerned over the manner in which provisions of the relevant Act are being violated. According to the Act, for any tree that is felled, one sapling should be planted within 60 days, the area residents say.

The KRCG Secretary, R. Ram Murthi, says in a press release that the Range Forest Officer concerned, Jilani Pasha, has assured the group that saplings will be planted by next week.
