Bid to empower women

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JULY 13. A series of self-defence workshops are being organised by the Smile Foundation, a non-government organisation working to promote unique health and education efforts by citizens as a response to the requirement in their neighbourhood.

Entitled "Basics of Self Defence'', these workshops are being organised for adolescent girls and women in the communities of Safdarjung, Okhla, Nangloi, Mahipalpur and Lado Sarai. The first of these workshops to be conducted by Delhi police experts will be held at St. Mary's School, Safdarjung Enclave on July 17.

The importance of training women in self-defence techniques cannot be overemphasised in a city where violence against women is on the rise and where women are considered unsafe.

"The sessions would be in the form of lectures coupled with discussion and demonstration of a few basic self-defence techniques,'' says Anupama Puri, Executive Co-Ordinator, Smile Foundation adding that the objective was to make the participants aware of different situations and how to deal with them.

Part and parcel of Smile Foundation's ongoing community empowerment projects, the workshops will be a wakeup call to participants. Messages like "Women have a right to their space'', "Women have a right to their freedom and autonomy'' and "Never think this could happen to you, be prepared'' will be given out through these workshops.

Also covered will be topics of "body language'', "how to use everyday items as weapons'', "myths about women, violence and self-defence'' and "basics about redressal procedures and how to approach the police''.

"The aim is to give them enough knowledge and skills so that they are able to defend themselves in the public,'' says Anupama, adding that Smile Foundation was planning to make these workshops a regular affair in their community women's empowerment projects now as well as in the future.
