One of the injured when a bus plunged into the Chenab in Doda district being taken to hospital in Jammu on Sunday.
The bus, which was on its way to Kishtwar from Doda, and the matador van collided on a curve near Premnagar and rolled down into the river around 8 a.m. The bus partially remained submerged in the river. Local villagers and rescue teams extricated the dead and the injured from the bus. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital and later some of the seriously injured were taken to Jammu by helicopter and admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital. The toll could climb as a few passengers of the crowded bus might have been washed away by the fast current of the Chenab river. Twenty-five bodies have been recovered so far. The Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, expressed profound grief over the accident. In a statement from Srinagar, Mr. Sayeed conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and expressed sympathies with the injured. The Chief Minister directed the Doda district administration to ensure the best possible treatment to the injured and speedy disbursement of the ex-gratia relief to the next of kin of those killed.
