The unit, taken off the grid on January 9, 2002 for the job, attained criticality at 9.26 p.m. tonight, said a press release from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. The "new improved material" zirconium 2.5 per cent niobium used in the replacement would extend the life of the reactor by "another 30 years". Apart from replacement of the heat exchangers in the steam generators, modifications have been carried out to restore the unit to its design capacity of 220 Mwe, which would translate into an additional 50 Mwe availability to the grid. The changes, effected at a cost of Rs. 352 crores, have been completed in 18 months, six months ahead of schedule, the release said.
