Reacting to a story that appeared in these columns on Sunday, Mr. Vijayabhaskar said the KPTCL Vigilance wing was "persecuting" him with a malicious intent. "Facts have been suppressed and there is a conspiracy to malign me," he said. Mr. Vijayabhaskar stressed that he was the senior-most "technocrat" in the State power sector with 29 years experience. "I was earlier the Managing Director of the Visvesvaraya Vidyut Nigam Ltd. So the director's post (at KPTCL) is a demotion," he said. According to him, the April 2001 Vigilance case against him "for causing pecuniary losses to the company" was false. "It was dismissed by a judicial magistrate's court at Karwar on April 3, 2003." He had in turn filed a case against the Vigilance wing in that court, he said. "I have, in fact, saved money for the company," he said without elaborating. "The case was filed only because I had asked for the post of Chairman, Karnataka Electricity Board at that time." Even the Lokayukta raid on his house on March 8, 2002, was "instigated" by the KPTCL Vigilance wing, he alleged. "The Lokayukta investigation is over, and nothing has been found to attract action under the Prevention of Corruption Act," Mr. Vijayabhaskar said.
