Sources in the PGCIL told The Hindu that the Chinese were looking at High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission projects. Such projects though expensive, are said to have much lower transmission and distribution losses. On Sunday, an eight-member delegation, led by Zhao Xizheng, Executive President of the State Grid Corporation of China, visited PGCIL's Kolar HVDC site. An official note said that the delegation went around the HVDC control room and the switchyard area, and inspected the 400 kV transmission system. PGCIL had a detailed presentation on the East-South Interconnector-II system.
