U.S. bill may restrict entry of Indian IT professionals

WASHINGTON JULY 13. In what could be a blow to Indian IT professionals aspiring to make it big in America, a U.S. lawmaker has introduced an amendment to the Immigration and Nationality Act restricting entry of foreign skilled labourers by repealing authorisation to issue further H-1B visas.

The bill brought up by the Republican MP from Colarado, Tom Tancredo, who is also the Chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, has been referred to the Judiciary Committee, where it will be examined.

If the committee approves it, it will be placed before the House for passage and then has to be passed by the Senate before it is sent to the President for signature.

Currently 65,000 workers are allowed to be brought in yearly under this category.

It was expanded at its peak to 1,95,000 or so when shortage of skilled workers was enormous in the U.S.
