MCA praises media groups for patronage

Mumbai July 13. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) lavishly praised media groups for their patronage of the game in Mumbai.

Announcing Mid-Day's Rs. 7.50 lakh sponsorship of the Dr. H. D. Kanga League at a press conference on Friday, the MCA's joint hon. secretary, Ratnakar Shetty said: "The Hindu and The Sportstar have been sponsoring the MCA Under-19 selection trial tournament for 17 years.''

Prof. Shetty pointed out that The Times of India had been running the Inter-Office for several years and now Mid-Day has come forward for the cause of Mumbai cricket in a big way. "I take this opportunity to recognise their contribution to Mumbai cricket", said Prof. Shetty.

Madhav Mantri, former president of the MCA and one of the handful of living cricketers who played in the inaugural year of the Kanga League in 1948, said: "I am happy the media is playing a big role that is necessary for the development of cricket."

Former India batsman and member of the MCA Cricket Improvements Committee (CIC), Nari Contractor and former Mumbai captain Milind Rege shared the sentiments expressed by Mantri.

"Corporate sponsorship is a vital vein for the survival of sports. I am happy that Indian hockey has finally found a sponsor in Sahara,'' said Contractor.
