Rs. 1.2-cr. stadium project on the cards

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA JULY 13. The Thiruvalla Municipal Chairman, Raju Mundamattom, has said that the municipality would soon launch a Rs. 1.2-crore development project for the public stadium here.

In a statement here today, Mr. Raju said the Union Government had agreed to sanction 50 per cent of the project estimate for implementing it in a time-bound manner.

According to him, the proposed development project includes construction of an indoor stadium and courts for various games. The Centre would also provide 50 per cent of the total cost, as grant to the local body.

He said M. Ramesh Chennithala, MP, had agreed to contribute a substantial amount from his local area development fund.

The Municipal Chairman said that the new private bus station would be made operational soon and the municipality proposed to shift the service operations of the KSRTC to the old private bus stand, which would be more convenient for commuters.

He said the municipality would seek the KSRTC's cooperation in converting the KSRTC bus stand into pre-paid parking lots for private vehicles in view of the inadequate parking facility in the town limits.

Mr. Mundamattom said the municipality was planning to set up a sports hostel and a full-fledged base camp for the Sabarimala pilgrims in the town limits. The municipality had prepared a scheme to rehabilitate all the families being evicted from the Railway `puramboke', he said.

He said the municipality had revamped its sanitation machinery in the wake of the epidemic fever threat in different parts of the district. He said that a 10-member sanitation squad had been deployed in each municipal ward for cleaning operations.

Mr. Mundamattom warned of strict action against hotels and other business establishments who dump waste in public places. The municipality had issued strict directions to those who run wayside eateries (`thattukadas') not to keep food articles in the open and to keep their surroundings clean, he added.
