CM hints at commercial tax Ordinance

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore July 10. The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, has said that the non-implementation of the value-added tax (VAT) system by the Union Government has caused confusion, and the Government will have to promulgate an Ordinance to revise commercial taxes for mobilising additional resources.

Replying to a question from M.R. Tanga during Question Hour in the Legislative Council today, Mr. Krishna said there would not be a flight of trade from the State on account of the revision in commercial taxes. Taxation was more or less the same in all the southern States, he added.

Rural weightage

To a question from P. Ramiah, the Chief Minister said the Government was keen on protecting the interests of candidates recruited by the Government on the basis of rural weightage, and efforts would be made to safeguard their employment in the interest of social justice.

The Chief Minister said the Government had filed a review petition in the Supreme Court, and was confident of a favourable decision. As per information available, about 16,000 candidates had secured appointment in government departments on the basis of rural weightage.

Framing of special rules to prospectively appoint the candidates who were terminated from service was under the Government's consideration.

KAS examination

Replying to a question from Basavaraj Horatti on irregularities in the Karnataka Administrative Service examinations conducted by the Karnataka Public Service Commission in 1998, Mr. Krishna said the Government had asked the Lokayukta to inquire into the matter and submit a report.

HC Bench

Replying to a question from K.C. Kondaiah on the demand for a High Court Bench in North Karnataka, Mr. Krishna said the committee constituted by the Chief Justice to look into the demand had examined the issue and submitted a report. The Bench would start functioning only after a notification was issued with the consent of the President, he added.
