Rain drifts landmines near Indo-Pak. border

By Our Staff Reporter

RS Pura (Jammu) July 10. The people living near the Indo-Pak. International border are under the "shadow of fear" as the rain increasingly drifts the landmines to the interior areas.

The security agencies have warned the border residents to be careful about their movement and remain away from the areas located near the minefields.

The drifting of the landmines is a weather phenomenon but during the rainy season due to the soft nature of the soil the drift further increases.

The border was strewn with landmines one and a half year ago during operation Parakarram depriving farmers of their land.

The areas which were mined included the most fertile zones of the region such as Ramgarh, Samba, R.S. Pura, Akhnoor, Pallanwala, Suchetgarh, Hiranagar, Nagri and Chambilyal.

The operation caused the displacement of around one lakh people on the Jammu frontier.

Last year the farmers did not face the problem of mines as they migrated into the interiors.

Though de-mining operations at the International Border started long time ago it is far from over.
