Letters to the Editor
Sir, Instead of offering a compromise formula to resolve the Ayodhya dispute, the Kanchi Shankaracharya utilised the opportunity for dictating terms to the minority community. By asking the Muslims to " donate " the disputed site for building the Ram temple and asking them to be mentally prepared for handing over Kashi and Mathura to the Hindus, he has only deepened the controversy and made the situation all the more volatile. Being the peacemaker that he was, the holy man was expected to strictly adhere to the sane approach of "give-and-take" and devise a formula that satisfied both parties. This action of the religious leader would give a fillip to organisations such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad for not only launching their Ayodhya movement with renewed vigour but also include Kashi and Mathura in their saffron agenda. All those who support the Ayodhya cause should ponder for a moment as to what they have gained from this over a decade-long controversy that has only resulted in tensions, simmering rifts, intolerance and abhorrence among communities. V. Rajesh, Mumbai
