While hundreds of sacked staff members came to the Secretariat here and District Collectorates this morning, in a desperate hope of reinstatement, the Government started the process of recruiting 15,500 assistants and junior assistants. The despondency among the one lakh dismissed staff members sharply contrasted with the hopes of thousands of people, including those in their late 30s and 40s, who have been waiting for a government job for several years now. Scores of graduates and postgraduates queued up at the Secretariat, even before office hours, for securing temporary posts of assistant. Hundreds of candidates, who have passed the SSLC examination, thronged the Collectorates for interviews for junior assistant posts. At the end of the day, about 2,000 persons were recruited in the State for a monthly pay of Rs. 4,000. The Government asked the recruits to sign a contract, which said the "appointment is purely temporary on a contract basis". The services of the appointees could be terminated anytime and the order of termination could not be challenged before any court. More importantly, they "shall not indulge in any activity detrimental to government interest. Such persons shall not join any service association or union."
