Jagmohan seeks report

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JULY 7 .The Union Tourism and Culture Minister, Jagmohan, today directed the Additional Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India to submit a report on the condition of lightning conductors installed at Safdarjung Tomb, Humayun's Tomb, Bara Gumbad at Lodi Garden and Akbar Khan's Tomb in Mehrauli here. Taking notice of a report appearing in the Monday edition of The Hindu, the Minister said he wanted to ensure that these tall monuments are safe from a lightning strike this monsoon.

The lightning conductors on Safdarjung's Tomb and Humayun's Tomb are missing in portions and therefore ineffective. The other two monuments, although at risk from a lightning strike, have never been fitted with conductors.

While ASI officials were asked to test the lightning conductors at these sites today and submit a report later, a sudden downpour prevented them from carrying out any experiment, a source at the Ministry said.

The report will now be submitted to the Minister tomorrow.
