While the Cooperation Minister, M.V. Raghavan, who belongs to the CMP, a partner in the UDF, today demanded a probe by a Central agency into the allegations, published in a weekly run by Left fellow travellers, the Congress Legislature Party Secretary, Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan demanded a probe by an Assembly Committee. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Raghavan, who is known for his penchant for CPI(M)-baiting, said that the CIA charge had been levelled by Marxist fellow travellers. The CPI(M) has been silent ever since the controversy hit the headlines. Prof M N Vijayan, the editor of "Padom'', was also the editor of the Deshabhimani Weekly, he alleged. He said that his party was demanding an inquiry by a Central agency because it related to questions of foreign funding. The RSP(B), another UDF partner, had demanded an independent inquiry into the allegations. The RSP(B) secretary, A. V. Thamarakshan, said that his party had all long been pointing out to the serious lapses in the implementation of the People's Plan Campaign. He said that the charges of CIA links that too levelled by Marxist bedfellows were some thing which the Government could hardly ignore. Mr. Radhakrishnan, said that the Assembly Committee could conduct a preliminary probe into the charges and if there was any substance in the allegations, a detailed probe could be ordered. He said that the functioning of the Centre for Development Studies should be probed, especially in relation to foreign funding of projects. The KPCC has not officially said any thing so far. The KPCC sponsored two-day convention of urban and rural local bodies did not utter a word on the allegations even though it captured the headlines when the session was on. The CMP and the RSP(B) have their own reasons for their attempts to queer the pitch for the CPI(M). Mr. Raghavan believes that the current exposures are the outcome of the faction feuds in the CPI(M) and that his party would be the primary beneficiary in the event of any exodus for the CPI(M). Recently, his party admitted a few functionaries of a panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram. The RSP(B) also feels that the it would be able to capitalise on the allegations on the strength of its Leftist credentials. The party has also been one of the chief CPI(M) baiters in the UDF. Interestingly, none of the leaders who have been reacting to the allegations have trained their spotlights on Thomas Isaac, CPI(M) State secretariat member, who has been the target of attack now on.
