Kerala
By Our Special Correspondent
Mr. Sudhakaran was replying to the debate on the demand for grants for Forest in the Assembly today. The department had sought clearance for an integrated catchment conservation project for protection of wetlands. Village forests would be developed in every village with the participation of Kudumbasree units. Cultivation of medicinal plants was being undertaken under the Kerala Forestry Project. A centre for protection of butterflies would be opened at Vazhachal. The Centre's assistance had been sought for protection of grasslands at Mathikettan and other areas as a park, he said. Fresh rules on management of elephants and cattle would be framed to prevent cruelty against elephants. Preventing units will be set up at airports and seaports to check smuggling of genetic material, he said. The compensatory afforestation in lieu of the land to be assigned to settlers will be completed during the Tenth Plan. Of the target of 57,180 hectares, only 15,219 hectares remained to be planted. The Nilambur wood industries has been reopened, and the State Forest Development Corporation is turning the corner, he added.
