Approach Cauvery tribunal: ryots

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI JULY 7. The Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam has urged the State Government to approach the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal for securing water and to safeguard the riparian rights of farmers here.

A resolution to this effect, adopted at a State conference here recently, said though the monsoon had set in, Karnataka appeared inclined to utilise the water for its own needs.

As the possibility of water reaching the Mettur dam seemed remote, the State Government should approach the tribunal for a genuine sharing arrangement.

Another resolution urged the State Government to write off cooperative loans as part of immediate drought relief and sought stoppage of distraint proceedings against farmers by the Cooperative department.

The conference protested the withdrawal of free power for agricultural pumpsets. Farmers would not pay power bill for agricultural pumpsets in September and villagers would neither allow disconnection nor fixing of meter.
