Karnataka
By Our Staff Reporter
Speaking to presspersons, the minister said that in view of reports from the Meteorological Department, the Government expected that the State would continue to reel under drought and had formulated programmes for the next 90 days. Meanwhile, it had completed works under 177 action plans utilising the foodgrains supplied by the Centre. He said that the Centre had been asked to send three lakh tonnes of foodgrains to take up relief works, of which only 55,000 tonnes was received. He admitted that Karnataka had failed in getting its due share of foodgrains and financial support from the Centre despite efforts by MPs and the members of the Cabinet subcommittee headed by the Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge. He expressed unhappiness over the Centre "succumbing" to pressure from Andhra Pradesh and extending all support to it. Mr. Koliwad said the Akshara Dasoha Scheme would not be stopped. Refuting the charge that the Government was utilising foodgrains allocated for drought relief for Akshara Dasoha, he said that it was using the foodgrains available with it under the public distribution system. The minister said that the Groundwater Conservation Bill, 1999 returned by the President without his assent, would be tabled again after making amendments.
