Attempts to contact the GMC Commissioner, D.Narayan, to get details about the files and documents burnt, allegedly by a section of the corporation officials, failed as his cell phone was switched off and he was neither available at the office nor his residence. The Mayor, Iqbal Ahmed, said that he too was unable to get in touch with the commissioner, and officials had told him that the papers and documents destroyed were old files that were of no use. Burning files at a time when a special team of auditors from Bangalore is here has given rise to suspicion that an attempt has been made to destroy evidence about the expenditure all these years. The former minister, S.K.Kanta, and Janata Dal (S) corporators, who were the first to visit the spot where the half-burnt files and documents were dumped in Om Nagar, told The Hindu that the allegations of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds by corporation officials had now been proved beyond doubt. He urged the State Government to order a detailed inquiry into the burning of files and wanted the Lokayukta to take note of the incident. Some of the corporation officials had also allegedly approached a freelance photographer who had taken pictures of the files being burnt to return the negatives.
