Gowda sees a ploy in Sangh Parivar attack on PM

By Our Correspondent

KARWAR JULY 7. The Janata Dal (S) President and former Prime Minister, H.D.Deve Gowda, has alleged that the recent statements by leaders of the Sangh Parivar against the Prime Minister, A.B.Vajpayee, is an attempt by them to misguide the people and the Opposition and divert attention from the problems facing the country.

Talking to presspersons after participating in a meeting of party workers here on Sunday, Mr. Gowda charged the main Opposition parties at the Centre with having failed to discharge their role properly. He particularly criticised the Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi, in this regard.

Reacting sharply to the reported statement by the Prime Minister during his recent China visit that Tibet was a part of China, Mr. Gowda said this only provoked the Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf, to claim that Kashmir should be considered part of Pakistan on similar lines.

Reacting to the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna's tour of the drought-hit areas in Gadag and Dharwad districts, Mr. Gowda said that the Chief Minister should have visited drought-affected areas long ago.

He said the Akshara Dasoha Scheme was implemented in a hurry and expressed anguish over schoolchildren falling ill after taking food in some places. Mr. Gowda said that the change of guard in the State unit of the BJP would not affect the prospects of his party.

Mr. Gowda said the JD(U) would formally merge with the JD(S) in August.

The President of the State unit of the JD(S), Siddaramaiah, who accompanied Mr. Gowda, said that a district-wise tour was being undertaken to activate party workers.

A convention of party workers of the State would be held in Bangalore in the first week of August.
