Nizamabad Collector confirms seven viral fever deaths

NIZAMABAD JULY 7. The District Collector, D.V. Raidu, on Monday said that seven children have died in the last 10 days due to suspected viral fever in the district.

Speaking to reporters here today, the Collector elaborated on the steps taken by the district administration to tackle the situation. He said reports of children falling sick was reported from Pocharam and Jaithapur of Yedpalli mandal, Banswada, Bodhan, Gargul in Nizamsagar, Ranampally in Kotgir mandal, Yanampalli of Dichpalli mandal, Amrad of Makloor mandal and Argonda of Tadwai mandal.

Mr. Raidu said only two fresh cases of suspected viral fever were reported today. The children, Pavani, (9), of Gautamnagar in the town and Vijja of Pocharam tanda are undergoing treatment at the hospital. The children were rushed here with complaints of high fever, convulsions and altered sensorium.

Indoor residual spray operations were carried out in eight villages where deaths occurred due to encephalitis. Malathion 25 WDP was utilised for this purpose in Amrad, Pocharam, Jaithapur, Kotgir, Banswada, Dharmaram (B), Yanampalli and Doosgaon villages.

More than 15,000 Gambusia fish were procured from the Fisheries Department and about 5,000 of them were released into stagnated water bodies in and around Nizamabad town.

For the time being, Baytex available with the Malaria officer is being positioned in all the 719 gram panchayats for immediate spraying.

The Collector pointed out that special health camps were conducted in Doosgaon tanda of Dichpalli mandal. The Collector personally visited the villages where the deaths were reported due to viral encephalitis and precautions were taken. Medical teams have been deployed to treat diarrhoea and fever cases at Bodhan, Banswada and Kamareddy civil hospitals.

Blood samples of the deceased encephalitis cases have been collected and sent to Director of Health services for further transmission to VBRI, Hyderabad. A control room to monitor and receive emergency calls round-the-clock is opened in the DMHO office. Another control room is opened in the office of the Deputy Director (Social Welfare).

About 1.5 lakhs doses of Belladonna have been supplied to immunization officer for distribution as a preventive medicine for brain fever. Seven school children in Pentakurd village in Bodhan mandal were given Belladonna tablets. Four hundreds more children at Kaloor village in the district were given Belladonna tablets.

On the directions of the Collector, 3,000 drinking water samples were drawn and sent for analysis. The balance drinking water sources would be analysed by July 15, the Collector added. Instructions were issued to chlorinate all the drinking water sources with bleaching powder.

Doctors attending the JB gram sabhas were explaining to the public the precautionary measures. The Panchayat Secretaries of Jaithapur and Yanampalli, were placed under suspension for dereliction of duty in ensuring proper sanitation.
