Focus on education, civic amenities at `basthi sabhas'

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD July 4. It was a smooth run in the city on the fourth day of the 19th round of Janmabhoomi with no embarrassing posers or protests and those in the `basthi sabha' playing an attentive audience on Friday.

The Minister for Tourism and Culture, T. Srinivas Yadav, who had to contend with a group of slogan shouting ``outsiders'' during the gram sabha held at V.V. Giri Nagar on Thursday, was greeted with beaming faces of schoolchildren at Zamistanpur Government High School in Musheerabad division and women at Moulana Azad Nagar `basthi sabha' in Kachiguda division.

Union Minister of State for Railways, Bandaru Dattatreya, inaugurated a new building for the high school, constructed at a cost of Rs.10 lakhs.

Later, addressing students and teachers, he said they should make use of the facilities being extended by the Government and work hard. Education was the only investment for the poor to come up in life, he said.

Mr. Srinivas Yadav reiterated that education was the top priority for the Government, and so far buildings had been constructed for 225 schools out of 800 in the city in the last four years. During this Janmabhoomi, 10 school buildings were being inaugurated. The next focus would be to provide furniture, toilets and compound walls for schools.

The Musheerabad MLA, K. Laxman, said effort would be to construct a school building in every slum area and achieve education for all by 2005.

In Moulana Azad Nagar `basthi sabha' under the Himayatnagar constituency, the MLA, C. Krishna Yadav, explained the long-pending drainage problem, drinking water scarcity and bad roads in the Kachiguda division. Earlier, he showed the Minister, the Municipal Commissioner, Chitra Ramachandran, and others the drainage problem in the area.

Later, cheques were distributed among women under the `Balika Samrakshna Pathakam' and the National Family Benefit scheme. Pink ration cards were also distributed among some applicants. A health camp, with 20 specialist doctors, was organised on the occasion. The Hyderabad Collector, Rajeshwar Tiwari, the Chief Rationing Officer, Venkateswar Rao, the Nodal Officer, Sarvayya, local corporators and others were present.
