Cellular firms told to tap rural potential

HYDERABAD July 4. The IT Advisor to the State Government, T.H. Chowdary, underscored the need for cellular operators to cover a larger area and reach out with the specific objective of extending mobile phone facility to the rural population.

He was addressing a meeting called by the Centre for Telecommunications Management and Studies and the Telephone and Internet Consumers' Association (TICA).

The occasion was celebration of the State crossing the one million mark in terms of mobile phone subscribers.

In the presence of representatives of all the four cellular operators in the State -- Airtel, BSNL, Idea and Hutch -- he said that they should strive to achieve a target of 2.5 million in the year 2003-04.

He recalled that to achieve the one million mark, it had taken cellular operators over 10 years, while the same mark in terms of fixed line connections in the State, was achieved in a whopping 105 years.
