Youth Cong. demands Nitish Kumar's resignation

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JULY 4. Demanding resignation of the Union Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar, Indian Youth Congress (IYC) workers today staged a demonstration near Rail Bhavan in the Capital alleging that the Railway authorities had failed miserably to ensure safety and security of passengers.

Led by the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary, Mukul Wasnik, and the IYC president, Randeep Singh Surjewala, a large number of IYC activists marched towards Rail Bhavan shouting slogans against the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre and Mr. Nitish Kumar. Some IYC activists along with Mr. Surjewala were reportedly detained by the police.

Addressing the protesters, Mr. Wasnik said Mr. Kumar was the most incompetent Minister in the Atal Behari Vajpayee Cabinet and even after repeated train mishaps and loss of lives, he had shown little moral responsibility to resign. Exhorting the IYC activists to start "a decisive battle'' to dislodge the NDA Government, he charged that the Vajpayee Government had failed on every front.

Demanding resignation of the Railway Minister, Mr. Surjewala said criminal cases should be registered against Mr. Kumar, the Railway Board Chairman, R.K. Singh, and other senior Railway officials for endangering safety and security of lakhs of railway passengers.

Condemning the Railway Ministry for its poor track record of safety, Mr. Surjewala said nearly 500 railway passengers have lost their lives in different rail mishaps during the past 12 months.
