300 children taken ill in Davangere

By Our Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE JULY 4. About 300 schoolchildren were taken to the Chigateri General Hospital today after they had their midday meal at the Bharath Colony School here. Lunch was served to all 520 children in the school. Half an hour later, many of them complained of stomach-ache and nausea. The school authorities rushed the children to the hospital, where they were given antibiotics. As many as 270 children were sent home after observation and treatment, and 30 children were kept in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

Shocked parents who thronged the hospital criticised the Government for giving "low quality" food to children. Senior district officials visited the hospital.

Doctors at the hospital told The Hindu that the 30 children in the ICU were out of danger.

Protest in Hubli

Our Hubli Special Correspondent writes:

Navalgund, a taluk town in Dharwad District, witnessed a procession being taken out demanding the suspension of midday meals being given as a part of the "Akshara Dasoha" programme.

This followed an incident in which 35 students developed symptoms of food poisoning after having midday meals in schools and were rushed to hospital this morning. Six students are undergoing treatment while others were treated as outpatients and sent home.

It is stated that the students of the Ganeshgudi Primary School had midday meals yesterday and developed symptoms of food poisoning this morning.
