'Govt. has failed to protect State's interests'

SHIMOGA July 4. The Union Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, and President of the State unit of the BJP, Ananth Kumar, on Friday criticised the Karnataka Government for its failure to protect the interests of the State.

He was addressing a gathering at Umblebylu near here, which he visited on his way to Sringeri. Mr. Kumar, who was visiting the district for the first time after assuming the party post, was given a rousing reception by party workers.

He said the failure of the Government in its handling of the Veerappan case had led to the death of the former minister, H. Nagappa.Mr. Kumar criticised the manner in which the Government handled the Cauvery and the CET issuesHe said he would continue to remain Union minister as long as the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, and the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, wanted him to.

State-level meeting

Our Udupi Staff Correspondent writes:

Mr. Kumar said that a State-level meeting of senior BJP leaders, including MPs, former MPs, MLAs, and MLCs would be convened in Bangalore on July 8 to chalk out a strategy to launch a people's movement against the State Government.

Addressing presspersons in Udupi,Mr. Kumar saidtheparty's "shakti kendras'' at the gram panchayat and ward levels would be improved.
