It's my duty to protect all people: CM

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUVALLUR JULY 4. "It is my duty, as Chief Minister, to protect all the people. I am the Chief Minister for not only those who voted me but also those who did not cast their votes", Jayalalithaa said here today.

Addressing a government function, after inaugurating 9,792 completed development works and laying the foundation stone for 469 welfare schemes and projects for Tiruvallur district at a total cost of Rs. 245 crores, she said it was her duty to give protection to the family of a party leader, who was recently killed.

Ms. Jayalalithaa, who narrated the story of a frog, which was accidentally hit by the bow of Lord Rama, said "some leaders are now making a hue and cry as if they do not know anything about the death of Kiruttinan (former DMK minister, who was killed in Madurai on May 20)".

Ms. Jayalalithaa, in her 45-minute speech, did not touch on the on-going strike by government employees, and spoke only about the welfare projects launched for Tiruvallur district.

Under `Idhayam Kappom', all deserving persons, irrespective of their party affiliations, were being provided free heart surgery. A DMK man's son recently underwent free heart surgery, the Chief Minister pointed out.

Stressing the need for conserving rainwater, she said the Government had already ordered that all buildings must have the RWH system installed. It would be made mandatory by October.

Ms. Jayalalithaa also inaugurated 18 RASI (Rural Access for Services through Internet) computer centres in rural areas of Tiruvallur district and a SIDCO complex exclusively for women on a 218- acre site at Ambattur at a cost of Rs. 8.04 crores. She announced that the World Bank had sanctioned Rs. 2,160 crores for development of roads in Tamil Nadu.

K. Kalimuthu, Speaker, who presided, said the previous DMK Government was responsible for the financial crunch now faced by the State.

Referring to the on-going strike, he said the "Government is a well, people are the land and government employees are irrigation channels. What will happen if the irrigation channels themselves suck water?", he asked.

The Social Welfare Minister, B.Valarmathi, the Handlooms and Textiles Minister, V. Somasundaram, and the chief Government whip, P.M. Narasimhan spoke.
