Resignation of Minister not an answer: BJP

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 4. The Resignation of the Railways Minister, Nitish Kumar, was "not an answer'' to the spate of accidents which have taken place in the last one year, the Bharatiya Janata Party said today.

"We (our Government) are trying to implement measures to improve railway safety, which will be done over five years...resignation (of the Minister) is not an answer (to improved safety record),'' the party spokesperson, Prakash Javadekar, said.

Over the last one year, more than 250 persons have been killed in several railway accidents, the latest in Warangal on Wednesday.

When asked, the spokesperson added that he did not think that Ministers should resign when accidents took place. He did not deny that in the past when it was in the Opposition the BJP had demanded accountability at the top, "but this does not resolve the problem of ensuring passenger safety.''

The problem lay in the "system'' which needed to be corrected, and for that adequate funds had been allocated, he said.
