Kerala
By Our Special Correspondent
In a statement here today, Mr. Bhargavan said the decision was a blow to rubber growers in Kerala. The decision to allow industrialists to import rubber was taken under the cover of a Supreme Court verdict. However, the Supreme Court had, in its judgment nullifying the notification banning rubber imports, stated that the Centre could issue a fresh notification to protect the interests of rubber growers, he pointed out. The CPI leader said the Central decision showed that it had succumbed to pressure from the tyre lobby despite knowing well that imports would depress rubber prices and land farmers in serious difficulties. The State Government should ask the Centre to immediately review its decision and farmers should bring sufficient pressure to bear on the Centre to change its stand, Mr. Bhargavan said. Mani demands withdrawal The Revenue Minister, K.M. Mani, demanded today that the notification issued by the Union Government lifting the ban on rubber imports should be withdrawn immediately. The Minister said that the decision would lead to a fall in rubber prices. The prices had improved only a few months ago. He criticised the Centre for taking the decision without consulting the States concerned.
