Meagre inflows in Mettur

By Our Staff Reporter

SALEM JUNE 30. After heavy inflows into the kabini reservoir last week, the Mettur dam has been realising meagre inflows since this morning.

"The inflow realisation is painfully slow and sadly insignificant", said a senior Public Works Department official here.

Reports from Bangalore confirmed that heavy rain in the catchment areas of the Cauvery had brought "good and steady'' inflows into the Krishnaraja Sagar too.

In anticipation of more rain, 2360 cusecs was released from the Kabini reservoir on June 23.

But, the official said, Karnataka subsequently scaled down the release from Kabini to a mere 400- 500 cusecs, thus dashing the hopes of realisation a sizable quantum of water in the Mettur dam. The bone-dry river course and heavy wayside pilferation further aggravated the problem, by reducing the flow into the reservoir.

In fact, the reservoir, which had been registering, an inflow of 81 cusecs for the last seven days, recorded a small increase of 131 cusecs at 9 p.m. on Saturday, thus signalling that water from Kabini had at last reached. It further increased to 324 cusecs early this morning. By noon, it registered 567 cusecs but thereafter remained static.

The level also increased from 25.89 to 25.97 feet (full level 120 feet). The storage increased from 5.88 to 6.01 tmcft. "It will take two or three more days to gauge and realise the exact amount of the release from the Kabini'', the PWD pointed out.
