While 20 students have already been convicted, seven others, who contested the case, were also convicted and released under Section 3 of the Probation of Offenders' Act. According to the prosecution, the accused issued fake certificates to nearly 100 students by forging and manipulating mark registers during 1987. A majority of the "beneficiaries" were outstation candidates studying correspondence courses. Many students, who failed in some subjects, approached the accused, who issued them pass mark-sheets, provisional certificates and degrees. However, the scandal got exposed after some employers referred the certificates to the university for verification. The CB-CID sleuths examined 108 witnesses, including a Registrar and Deputy Registrar. As many as 900 documents (including fake degrees) were marked as exhibits in the case. A total of 17 employees were booked under Sections 409 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 465 (using forged documents as genuine), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) of the IPC. The first judicial magistrate, Bhagavathiammal, found 11 accused including, Ramachandran, Somasundaram and Feriera (all superintendents), guilty on four counts and sentenced them to two years imprisonment each (to run concurrently). Six employees were acquitted.
