SAP to increase workforce

BANGALORE JUNE 30. The German-based IT major SAP plans to double its workforce to 2,000 in the next three years and shift a part of its business process outsourcing (BPO) to India. India is expected to emerge as a hub for the firm's software development.

The SAP Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Henning Kagermann, told presspersons here that as part of the company's strategy, SAP was aiming to double its workforce in India. SAP India has about 1,000 employees including 500 plus professionals at SAP Labs India, one of the strategic solutions development centres of the company. Incidentally, it is the largest R & D centre of the company outside Germany.

Mr. Kagermann said the company planned to move its shared services (BPO) and India was a candidate for it, which could provide support for the firm's global operations.

SAP, he said, had a 60 per cent market share in the country's enterprise resource planning (ERP) business and 29 per cent share in the CRM segment. With close to 400 customers in India, SAP develops software applications for over 17 of the 23 verticals it caters to. These include Wipro, Infosys, ONGC, Tata Power, Indian Oil, Tata Steel, L & T., amongst others.

SAP Labs India is investing $20 million in a new 21-acre campus in Whitefield here which will focus on global research and development. Holding the record for the largest SAP facility in the Asia-Pacific region, the campus will house the current workforce of over 600 professionals with a capacity of 750 workplaces in the first phase and 1,100 professionals in the second phase.
