Madrid: A Spanish judge has charged the former Argentine military official, Ricardo Miguel Cavallo, of genocide and terrorism, hours after Cavallo was extradited from Mexico. ``The criminal activity alleged in a provisional form against the accused is so serious that it leaves no other option than that of prison,'' said the National Court Judge, Baltasar Garzon, in his order on Sunday jailing Cavallo without bond until his trial. No date has been set for the trial. Cavallo was an alleged military interrogator at the Navy Mechanical School, said to be one of the most notorious centres of repression during the 1976-83 military dictatorship. He has acknowledged that he was in Argentina's military, but has denied involvement in torture. Under Spanish law, offences such as genocide and crimes against humanity can be prosecuted in Spain even if they did not occur here.
