American Michael Phelps signals after setting a world record in the men's 200m individual medley in Santa Clara, California on Sunday. AFP
The 17-year-old from Baltimore erased the old mark of 1:58.16s set by Finland's Jani Sievinen on September 11, 1994 at the World Championships in Rome. Phelps also lowered his own American record from 1:58.68s, which had been set last August. Phelps won the race here by 4.68s over runner-up Kevin Clements. The event, part of USA swimming's Grand Prix series, serves as a tune-up for elite swimmers who will compete in next month's World Championships at Barcelona, Spain. It was the third victory in as many days here for Phelps, who captured the 200m butterfly on Friday in 1:56.06s and the 100m butterfly on Saturday in 52.65s.
