TRS for all-party meet on excess drawal from RDS

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD June 26. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) on Thursday demanded that the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, convene an all-party meeting to chalk out a strategy to prevent Karnataka from "illegally'' drawing excess water over the quantity allocated to it under the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS) in Mahabubnagar district.

The TRS wanted the Chief Minister to lead a delegation of representatives of all political parties to Delhi to represent the matter to the Central Government and protect the interests of farmers of Telangana region.

Addressing a press conference here, the TRS president, K Chandrasekhar Rao, said that while there was an assured allocation of 15.9 tmcft of water to RDS, the project was getting only 4 to 5 tmcft water from the past several years. "The Chief Minister's response to our demand will expose his true colours on the development of Telangana. Mr Naidu raised a furore over the Paragodu project which provides only 0.12 tmcft water and went ahead to drag the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi into the issue. But he is now maintaining silence over the denial of water to Mahabubnagar farmers,'' he said adding the Government should take steps to ensure water to the more than 80,000 acres ayacut under the RDS steps if it was really committed to the development of Telangana.

Mr Rao also criticised the Chief Minister for not responding to the tense situation that prevailed at the RDS project site yesterday when people of Mahabubnagar and Kurnool districts almost got into a clash over the closure of sluice gates. "The Chief Minister did not even ask the people to observe restraint. What indications does Mr Naidu wants to give by remaining a mute spectator to such incidents,'' he asked.
