Meet on ID cards, voters' list today

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI June 26. The Election Commissioner, B.N. Tandon, will hold a review meeting with the District Collector of Chittoor tomorrow on a wide range of issues such as issue of photo identity cards, revision of voters' list, opening of additional booths, polling centres and bifurcation. The district administration, led by the Collector, Sai Prasad, is doing all the spadework for the review meeting.

The Election Commissioner, who arrived here on Thursday, offered prayers in the temple of Goddess Padmavathi, Tiruchanur, before holding a similar review meeting covering the Tirupati Revenue Division. Sources said that the Election Commissioner has asked the RDO, Tirupati, Rami Reddy to bifurcate into two the polling stations, which had more than 1500 voters. There are 37 such polling stations in the division and all of them will be bifurcated to decongest them and to ensure a free and fair polling. Similar instructions are given with regard to the polling centres which had five or more booths also. With regard to the issue of photo ID cards, the Election Commissioner was informed that 79 per cent of the work was complete in the Tirupati Assembly segment, 71 per cent in Chandragiri, 67 per cent in Srikalahasti and 62 per cent in Sathyavedu. Mr. Tandon asked officials concerned to rush all fresh proposals, if any, for additional polling centres, booths and such other allied matters so that everything could be put in place as scheduled for the ensuing elections.

The MRO, Tirupati (Urban), Babaiah, also attended the meeting. Mr. Tandon would be staying tonight at Tirumala, the abode of Lord Venkateswara before leaving for Chittoor tomorrow on the last leg of his visit.
