Krishna asks BDA to restore KSP building

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE JUNE 26. The Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, on Thursday instructed the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to restore the prestigious Krishnaraja Parishanmandira of Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) to its pristine glory. The mandira is the hub of activities of the KSP.

The Chief Minister was responding to the plea of Harikrishna Puranoor, KSP President, and its honorary secretaries, G.Shankaraiah and Pundalika Halambi, who had called on him.

The Chief Minister directed Jayakar Jerome, BDA Commissioner, to renovate the seven-decade-old mandira. Mr. Krishna suggested that the old building be restored without compromising on its architecture.

Mr. Punaroor explained the legacy of the historic mandira, which was built in 1931 with the patronage of the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wadiyar, Kanteerava Narasimharaja Wadiyar, and Kantharaj Urs, who was also the President of KSP. He explained the sorry state of the prestigious building and requested the Government to restore it.

The Chief Minister immediately called up Mr. Jerome and instructed him to undertake the task. Mr. Krishna also agreed to release Rs. 1 crore as special grant to the KSP for its literary activities. Mr. Punaroor thanked the Government for the gesture. He explained that the KSP would utilise the special grant to complete its ambitious projects such as bringing out the second version of Kannada-Kannada-English Dictionary, publishing three books on ancient Kannada poetry, computerisation of records of the KSP, publication of academic books, and for conservation of old works of historical importance.

Mr. Punaroor thanked the Chief Minister for his personal annual contribution of Rs. 10,000 to the KSP, and said that this year's instalment had been received.
