`Industry responding to environmental concerns'

BANGALORE June 26. An international round-table on `Contemporary global environmental legal concerns' today took stock of the Government of India project on strengthening the environmental capacity of managers of environment.

Hosted by the Centre for Environmental Law Education, Research, and Advocacy (CEERA) of the National Law School of India University, the round-table touched on five themes, including global environmental governance, climate change, conservation and management of natural resources, managing trans-boundary pollution and hazardous wastes, and environmental education.

In his keynote address, the Lokayukta, Justice N.Venkatachala, who was the first chairperson of the Environmental Appellate Authority, said the agenda to address contemporary global environmental legal concerns had become a widely studied subject.

It had opened up opportunities to address serious environmental problems through the legal system, which was strong and robust one in India, Mr. Justice Venkatachala said. The guest speaker, K.P.Nyati, who heads the Environmental Law Division, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), said the last two decades had seen the industry respond positively to environmental concerns, and were changing the way production was achieved, to reduce and minimise ecological damage. Technology and good practices geared to minimise stress on the environment were widely in use, and forums such as CII were constantly updating themselves on new technology and know-how to make cleaner production a reality.

Many international experts from different parts of the world, 30 Indian experts, academics, activists, research scholars, law practitioners, judges, and environmental administrators attended the meeting. The CEERA Coordinator, O.V.Nandimath, said the papers presented at the round-table would be brought as a special issue of the Indian Journal of Environmental Law. The Additional Professor, M.K.Ramesh, acting Director of NLSIU, A.Jayagovind, the Registrar, V.S.Mallar, participated in the seminar.
