dated June 27,1953: Brickbats for Keith Miller

All-rounder Keith Miller captained the Australian tourists against Yorkshire. After the game was over, `Miller Fails captaincy test' was the headline of an article by former Australian spin bowler Ian Johnson in the Melbourne Argus. Johnson wrote: "Keith Miller as captain has brought no great credit on himself. He failed to grasp a splendid opportunity to advance his claims as Hassett's successor. Miller's decision to send Yorkshire into bat first was a mistake, but understandable. But his handling of the bowlers on the second morning brought justifiable criticism. His decision to open the Australian innings with wicket-keeper Tallon was either an incredibly bad one, or a case of burlesque."
