Letters to the Editor
Sir, Your forthright Editorial `Ban corporal punishment' ( June 17 ) is highly commendable. The teacher is a friend, philosopher and guide of the children entrusted to his care. Corporal punishment as a means of correcting the child is outmoded, ineffective and harmful. While it leaves a scar on the body, it leaves a deeper scar on the mind, producing a far-reaching effect. The child develops a hatred for the subject as well as the teacher. The trauma of pain and worse, the sense of shame before peers, haunt him life long. This is hardly conducive to concentration on studies. The remedy proves to be worse than the malady.
